LGBTQ+ 'Positive Path' Bridgewater Canal Walk

The Bridgewater Canal towpath is one of the most accessible and rewarding easy walks available around Manchester. The canal was completed in 1761 as one of the first true canals in Britain and its historic towpath is now one of the most popular flat walking and cycling routes in Greater Manchester, offering peaceful, traffic-free walking through a variety of landscapes from urban canalside to open Cheshire countryside.

From Castlefield, walkers can head west along the towpath past Old Trafford towards Stretford and arriving in Sale — a two-way journey of approximately 10 miles arriving at the extraordinary Roman fort remains and canal basin at Castlefield Urban Heritage Park.

Distance: Flexible to your own capabilities. The route has bus and tram stations along it, when you have had enough you can easily get back into Manchester. Difficulty: Easy — completely flat throughout.

Start point: Castlefield (Meet outside the Oxnoble Pub on Liverpool Road) at 11.45am to set off at 12 MIDDAY. Please arrive on time as we will not wait.

Date: Sunday 27th September 2026

Refreshments: A drink and snack will be provided.

Travel costs: George House Trust will provide travel expenses in accordance with the travel expenses policy. A Bee Network Day Saver is £5 for multiple bus journeys, or two seperate single bus tickets total £4 (£2 per leg of the journey).
