We’re here for trans, non-binary and gender diverse people living with HIV

Trans people living with HIV experience high levels of unmet need and unique structural challenges, especially in healthcare settings. This leads directly to poorer health outcomes and higher levels of disadvantage and discrimination.

The latest data reported 282 trans people living with HIV across England in 2024, but this information has only been collected since 2016, and is reliant on clinics asking how people define their gender identity, so there is a risk trans people are underreported in official HIV statistics.

We hope that continued research about the experiences of trans people living with HIV will help us better understand concerns within the trans community and develop targeted initiatives to improve health and wellbeing.

Earlier this year, we joined other HIV organisations to outline our position on trans rights, and called on the Equality and Human Rights Commission's (EHRC) draft guidelines to be withdrawn following April’s Supreme Court ruling.

Inclusive support

Being trans and living with HIV can sometimes feel overwhelming, juggling your wellbeing, and experiences of prejudice and stigma. It means finding the right support can be tricky, and lead to anxiety about how you might be treated.

We want to make it clear that all our advice and support is trans inclusive, and you are welcome to access any of our services appropriate to your needs.

We are committed to being an ally to the trans community and ensuring all parts of our services are accessible to everyone who needs them, we are fighting for a world where HIV holds nobody back.

FAQs

We use ‘trans’ as an umbrella term to include anyone who identifies as transgender, non-binary, gender diverse, and anyone else who feels this label applies to them. Regardless of where you are in your journey of understanding your gender identity, George House Trust is here for you. We will always use your preferred name and pronouns, and you are able to attend whichever support groups you feel best align with your experience.

In 2025, we launched our Trans Engagement Project, initially funded by the Manchester Pride Impact Fund. Our goal with this project was to understand the barriers trans people face when searching for HIV information, getting support to live well with HIV, and to implement necessary changes to make our services more accessible to trans people.

Our Trans Engagement Project comes to an end in December 2025, but we will be taking forward recommendations to looking to continually improve our service.
