AIDS Quilt on Display in Manchester

To mark the Manchester Pride period and honour the lives of those lost to the HIV and AIDS epidemic, Block 47 of the historic UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is going on public display at The Kimpton Clocktower. This poignant memorial will be available for public viewing for one week, from Monday 24th August, until Monday 31st August.
The display provides a rare and vital opportunity for the public to pause, reflect, and celebrate the lives of those we have lost, whilst standing in solidarity with people living with HIV today.
The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt represents over 600 people lost to HIV and AIDS in the UK. Part of the world’s largest community art project, first begun in 1985 by activist Cleve Jones in the USA and coordinated in the UK by Scottish activist Alastair Hume in the late 1980s, every panel was lovingly created by friends, family, and chosen family. Measuring 3ft by 6ft to symbolise a typical grave plot, the individual panels were stitched together to form massive 12ft by 12ft blocks. Block 47, featured at the Kimpton Clocktower, is a powerful visual reminder of both the sheer scale of the loss and the vibrant, unique humanity of every life it holds.
At a time when intense stigma meant many died unnamed and unmourned in public, the creation of the Quilt was a profound act of defiance and protest. It declared that these individuals existed, they mattered, and they will never be forgotten.
Today, thanks to monumental medical advances, HIV is a highly manageable condition. People on effective antiretroviral treatment can live healthy, long lives and cannot pass the virus on? a scientifically proven fact known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable).
However, whilst the science has transformed, the fight against social stigma, inequality, and a lack of awareness continues. Displaying the Quilt during Manchester Village Pride is not only an act of remembrance but a renewed call to action to champion dignity, equality, and respect for everyone living with HIV.
The UK Quilt is proudly conserved by the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt Partnership, a coalition of seven UK HIV support charities formed in 2014. The Partnership works tirelessly to protect the fragile collection from deterioration, ensure it remains on public display as often as possible, and seeks a permanent home for this vital piece of social and LGBTQ+ history.
Members of the public, Pride attendees, and allies are encouraged to visit The Kimpton Clocktower throughout the week to view Block 47, pay their respects, and connect with the legacy of HIV activism.
