George House Trust Drag Ball 2016

On Saturday 2nd July 2016, we hosted the second George House Trust Drag Ball, which raises funds for our vital work, as well as celebrating our local drag community.

 

The sell-out event was attended by 250 people and there were 38 performers involved in the show.  The event raised a grand total of £8,723.00, which will all go to supporting people living with or affected by HIV.

being+ Creates a Peer Support Legacy

being+ a three year project, funded by the Monument Trust, has now come to an end.

 

Over the lifetime of the project we have been able to provide a number of different services targeted principally at gay and bisexual men in employment and / or under 30.  

 

One of the legacies from the project is a diverse and committed group of HIV positive gay men who trained as Peer Mentors and have supported other gay men through difficult periods in their lives.  Here’s what some of the men said, after receiving support:

 

“I found it invaluable to be able to meet up with somebody in a similar position who had experience of living with HIV and was able to talk openly and honestly about issues.”

 

“He answered the questions that I needed to know, which made me feel more prepared when I went to the clinic to start treatment.”

 

“It gave me an avenue for any questions relating to the experience of being HIV positive.  As I didn’t know any other positive people at the time, this was invaluable.”

 

“It’s increased my confidence and self-esteem.  I also can speak more openly about my diagnosis without feeling embarrassed or ashamed.  The mentoring support changed my outlook for the future, making me more optimistic.”

 

We are pleased to say that our Peer Support service for gay men living with HIV will continue after the end of the project.   If you’re a gay man and you feel that you’d benefit from talking to someone else living with HIV please contact Peter Boyle.

Can’t Travel? We’re Only a Phone Call Away…

George House Trust can still offer you support when you need it even if you can’t get into Manchester.

 

If you have mobility issues which might prevent you from coming in to see us, we may be able to provide a volunteer driver to collect you and bring you in to see us.

 

If you still find it difficult to get to George House Trust then we are more than happy to offer you a telephone appointment at a time that suits you, or look with you at other ways in which we could offer you support.

 

If you have not been in for a while, book an appointment so that we can tell you about our current services and chat with you about any support or advice you might need.

 

We want to make sure that all of our service users, no matter where they are in Greater Manchester are able to access our services – so don’t let not being able to travel into Manchester stop you from getting in touch. Call us!

Spotlight On Mariam Yusuf

We are delighted that George House Trust volunteer, Mariam Yusuf, has received the Woman of the Year Award at this year’s Women on the Move Awards ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall, London.  The Women on the Move Awards and Fellowship recognise and celebrate inspirational leadership and contribution from migrant and refugee women to UK society. The awards are a way of saying “thank you” to these committed and courageous women and to be inspired by their positive energy and inventiveness in these difficult times.

It is no surprise to us that Mariam has received this accolade.  Mariam has been a volunteer at George House Trust since 2013, and has supported our charity, volunteering across many of our activities.  She has shown a real commitment to supporting people who use George House Trust services and can always be relied upon. Our service users have really appreciated her care, knowledge and energy. Mariam’s involvement has significantly contributed to improving the quality of life for many people living with HIV and is an absolute joy to work with.

 

We are pleased to be able to shine a spotlight on Mariam's achievement.

CROI 2016 HIV and Transgender Women

The recent 'Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2016)' has revealed that HIV disproportionately affects the transgender female community, with more effort needed to improve both prevention and treatment services for trans women.

READY STEADY SPIN! with BNY Mellon Manchester

Last year George House Trust and BNY Mellon Manchester won Collaboration of the Year at the Inclusive Network Awards 2015.  Now BNY Mellon Manchester is fundraising for George House Trust and other charities supported by its Employee Resource Groups. 

 

This exciting challenge brings together BNY Mellon Manchester’s focus on diversity and inclusion, community partnership and wellbeing. They want everyone to get involved through signing up to cycle, cheering on participants and of course helping to raise funds.

 

The challenge will be to cycle the distance between Manchester and New York - a staggering 3,334 miles.

 

Starting at 3pm on 13th July, you will have 24 hours to cycle in slots of 15 minutes to reach the target.  

 

The challenge will take place across BNY Mellon's two sites in Manchester – Piccadilly Gardens and Hardman Square in Spinningfields - and you can cycle anytime, day or night, during the 24 hours.

A Piece of Cake Running for George House Trust

Our fantastic friends at Manchester Frontrunners held their ‘Cake Run’, an annual 10km race with a difference, on Saturday 30th April 2016.  George House Trust were delighted to attend and fundraise at this event, with our volunteers staffing a fabulous cake stall, filled with tasty treats that had been lovingly baked by the participants of the race.

 

The Cake Run marks the Manchester Frontrunner’s 11th birthday and lots of local running groups, as well as London and Paris Frontrunners came along to help them celebrate the occasion.
