Community Researcher
To support the evaluation of the 40 Years of HIV Activism project by attending exciting events throughout the 40th year anniversary.
You will use your interpersonal skills to relate and build rapport with event attendees and encourage conversations about what impact the project has on them personally.
You will then work alongside the evaluation lead to process and present the findings. You will use your personal experience to ensure that the findings are presented in interesting, effective, and engaging ways.

- Data collection: Speak to visitors and participants at key project events (e.g., the exhibition launch, Black History Month event, LGBT History Month event, Pride, and World AIDS Day) to gather opinions and insights. Interviews may take place on the spot or over the phone;
- Quantitative data gathering: Using surveys to gather information from people at events and online; engage with event and exhibition visitors to encourage participation in feedback;
- Community interaction: Build trust and engagement with participants, creating a welcoming environment that encourages people to share their thoughts and reflections;
- Analysing findings: Work with the evaluation lead to analyse collected data, identify key themes, and contribute to the development of how we can present the impact of the project;
- Skills development: Participate in training sessions, including training on peer research, data handling and interpretation, interview techniques, and ethical research practices;
- Engaging audiences: Collaborate on creative ways to share project findings, including drafting accessible summaries and supporting community events showcasing the project's outcomes.
Training over two sessions; gathering data, data interpretation, and reporting.
Attendance at events throughout the year (mostly evenings and weekends) equating to around 4 hours per month.
Events at George House Trust, Manchester Central Library, community venues and some office-based data work.
- Communication skills: Comfortable engaging with diverse individuals and communities;
- Interest in community engagement and HIV activism: Passionate about supporting the legacy and ongoing impact of HIV activism;
- Detail-oriented and organised: Able to capture feedback accurately and organise data effectively;
- Teamwork: Enjoys working in a team environment, with the ability to engage in peer support.
- George House Trust Volunteer Induction (if not already completed);
- Initial Training in February 2025: peer research methods, ethical data collection, and interview techniques;
- Additional workshop: best methods to analyse and make sense of the data and feedback;
- Event-specific preparation: Briefings before major events to equip volunteers with guidance to feel confident to effectively engage with attendees.

- Monthly online check-ins with Evaluation Lead;
- Ongoing support by Project Lead (Joe Tanzer).
