THE GREATER MANCHESTER UK AIDS MEMORIAL QUILT TRAIL

Inspired by the 2019 Global World AIDS Day theme ‘Communities make the Difference’, we are delighted and proud to announce an exhibition of panels from the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt in locations across Greater Manchester in the run up to World AIDS Day, December 1st 2019.

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is a unique and powerful historical and social artefact and an irreplaceable piece of HIV history. It tells the stories of people lost to the virus in the early days of the HIV epidemic in the UK. Loved ones are honoured and remembered in panels made by partners, friends and families. This is the first time any of the Quilt panels have been exhibited in Greater Manchester since 2007.

The Greater Manchester UK AIDS Memorial Quilt Trail will run from 25th November until 1st December at various venues.  A launch event will take place at HOME, Manchester on 25th November at 6.30pm.

VENUES

Each venue will display a panel from the Quilt.  Each panel measures 12 foot x 12 foot (3.6m x 3.6m)

WORLD AIDS DAY

Since the virus was identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV-related illnesses. Nearly 37 million people are living with HIV today with over 101,000 of those in the UK.

Despite huge medical advances in treatment, HIV remains a highly stigmatised medical condition. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to remember those lost to HIV globally, to raise awareness and to educate people about HIV today.

Neal Sharpe, Joint Interim Executive Director, George House Trust, says:

"We believe that the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt can be used as a key resource to raise levels of awareness about HIV. By personalising those who have died from HIV related illnesses and by presenting information about people living with HIV today, we hope to break down barriers and challenge the stigma that still affects the lives of many people living with HIV.”

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt Trail leads up to the Greater Manchester World AIDS Day Vigil which takes place on Sunday 1st December at 6pm in Sackville Gardens, the site of the Beacon of Hope, Manchester’s memorial to those lost to HIV/AIDS.

George House Trust is coordinating and delivering the Greater Manchester UK AIDS Memorial Quilt Trail for the PaSH (Passionate about Sexual Health) Partnership as part of Greater Manchester’s World AIDS commemorations.

The PaSH Partnership is a collaboration between George House Trust, BHA for Equality and LGBT Foundation.

The George House Trust Drag Ball is back for 2019!

The George House Trust Drag Ball will be returning and it is bigger than ever.

This celebration of Manchester’s vibrant drag scene will take place on Thursday 25th July at the O2 Ritz, and this year is inspired by the 50th anniversary of one of the most important historical events in the fight for LGBT rights, the Stonewall Riots.

The George House Trust Drag Ball will celebrate LGBT history through some incredible performances and a riotous party. The event will be our biggest Drag Ball yet, incorporating many genres of drag and some of Manchester’s most recognisable Queens.

Samuel Clarke, Community Fundraising Organiser at George House Trust said

“Manchester’s gay village and drag community have been huge supporters of George House Trust, both in their awareness raising and fundraising.

So many fantastic Queens support the work of George House Trust and with it being fifty years since Stonewall, we wanted to bring back our Drag Ball not only to highlight the importance of the drag community in LGBT history, but to celebrate the incredible ways that Manchester’s drag community supports people living with HIV.

Our last Drag Ball was a huge hit with the Queens and the public, so we’re thrilled to be able to bring it back.”

This year, the event is in memory of long time George House Trust supporter Anthony Molloy, who sadly passed away in April. Anthony was instrumental in previous George House Trust Drag Balls and the event would not have been possible without his incredible support and generosity.

THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND

THANK YOU!

Last week, George House Trust hosted its second 'Friends of George' event, where supporters of the charity were invited to see exactly what had been happening at George House Trust over the past twelve months and also to look at what events are coming up in the next year. The event was held at Lily's Bar, Manchester - a supporter and charity partner of George House Trust.

Chair of George House Trust, Jo Hancock and CEO, Stephanie Mallas, gave updates on Pride and World AIDS Day, where so much support for George House Trust was centred around the promotion of the Undetectable=Untransmittable (U=U) message, the incredible advocacy work that saw every tattooist in Greater Manchester receiving notification from the local authority that it is illegal to refuse to tattoo someone on the basis of their HIV status as well as Manchester mothers living with HIV being given formula milk for the first twelve months after the birth of their child.

Friends of George were entertained by resident Lily's Bar drag performer Coco Pop. Community Fundraising Organiser Samuel Clarke then gave a number of updates, thanking all of the fantastic Friends of George for their continued support. There was also the news that George House Trust will be holding its second Fundraising Gala on Saturday 26th October.

The evening was rounded off by Finance Director Neal Sharpe, Services Director Colin Armstead and CEO Steph Mallas presenting the project ambitions for the coming year, which included the continued promotion of the absolutely vital U=U message.

It was a lovely evening and a really great opportunity to find out more about what has been happening at George House Trust over the last twelve months.

TATT'S A RESULT!

TATT'S A RESULT!

Some time ago we were made aware of two cases in Greater Manchester where tattoos were refused to people living with HIV.

Whilst we acknowledge that there will be many tattooists who would not, and do not, discriminate against people living with HIV, the two instances of which we were made aware were very concerning.

Consequently, we have been advocating over the last twelve months with each of the ten Greater Manchester Local Authorities to ensure that there are no repeats of the discrimination reported to us.

Steph Mallas, George House Trust CEO said:

"We are delighted that, as a result of our persistent and determined lobbying, every licensed tattooist in Greater Manchester has now received a letter from their relevant Local Authority advising them that to refuse to tattoo someone solely on the basis that the person is living with HIV would be in breach of the Equality Act 2010".

Living with HIV is not a reason to refuse to tattoo someone.

If you are living with HIV and request a tattoo, you may be asked about your general health by the tattooist – this is standard practise and allows you and the tattooist to make a decision together about whether to proceed.

However, you should not be refused a tattoo based solely on the fact that you are living with HIV.

If you experience HIV discrimination from a tattooist please let us know.

We’re grateful for the support of the Local Authorities across Greater Manchester who agreed to contact their licensed tattooists -   a fantastic result achieved through working together to challenge HIV stigma and discrimination
